Rodborough Community Primary School

RSPB Wild Challenge

We’re proud to share that we have joined schools across the UK in the RSPB Wild Challenge 2026. The Challenge is a fun and rewarding nature-focused awards programme that encourages children to explore and help the wildlife around them.

What Is the RSPB Wild Challenge?

The Wild Challenge is a free, nationwide initiative from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds that helps pupils:

  • Experience nature through outdoor activities like wildlife observing and habitat exploring
  • Help nature by taking actions like building bug hotels to growing wildlife-friendly plants
  • Earn awards Bronze, Silver or Gold – by completing a mix of activities and submitting evidence of what they’ve done

It’s a brilliant way to bring learning to life, support school curriculum goals, and make real contributions to wildlife conservation. Taking part helps our pupils:

  • Build observation and data skills
  • Learn about biodiversity and ecosystems
  • Connect classroom learning with real-world science
  • Develop respect and care for the natural world

We're kicking off with the Big Schools’ Birdwatch!

Our Wild Challenge journey begins with the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch, taking place between 6 January and 13 February 2026. Pupils will head outdoors to spot and count birds in the school grounds, recording what they see and submitting their results to the RSPB.

The Big Schools’ Birdwatch counts as one of the Experiencing Nature activities for the Wild Challenge, getting us one step closer to earning our award. Not only is it fun for the children, it also helps scientists understand how birds are doing across the UK.

What’s next?

After the Big Schools’ Birdwatch ends, we’ll continue exploring nature through more Wild Challenge activities. From mini-beast safaris to planting wildlife-friendly gardens, the whole school will be working towards earning our Bronze, Silver, or (fingers crossed!) Gold award.

Stay tuned for updates and photos as we take on our Wild Challenge and help make Rodborough Community Primary School a champion for nature!
