At Rodborough Community Primary School, we teach Systematic Synthetic Phonics following the guidance from Letters and Sounds documentation. In Reception, we build upon learning from pre-school and nursery settings and complete Phases 2 and 3, Year 1 covers Phase 4 and 5 which is then reviewed in Year 2 alongside the teaching of Phase 6.
Children all have access to Bug club, both at home and school, and are allocated levelled books suited to their level of phonic knowledge; these include books from: ORT, Floppy Phonics, Rigby Star, Bug Club and Heinemann. The children will have the skills to decode the words in these books themselves. Children also have access to free reading books from class libraries that they can choose to read for pleasure; they may need more support to read these as they may not yet be able to independently decode all the words in them.
